The Multi-Tiered Barn Loft uses vertical space to maximize square footage within a compact coop footprint. Designed for high-ceiling barns, this layout gives your chickens multiple levels to explore using angled timber ramps and stepped perches.
What This Idea Means
Rather than spreading out horizontally, this layout leverages verticality. It keeps the main ground floor clear for walking and maintenance while creating elevated roosting decks near warm roof beams.
How to Make It
- Construct a barn room with an interior ceiling height of at least 6 to 7 blocks.
- At the 3-block mark, build hanging loft platforms along the side walls using Spruce Slabs supported by Log beams.
- Attach Spruce Trapdoors or Birch Stairs diagonally along the walls to form climbable ramps running from the floor up to the lofts.
- Frame the upper loft borders with Fences or Iron Bars for safety and visual framing.
- Line the upper platforms with nests made from Trapdoors surrounding Bed blocks or Hay Bales.
Tips & Variations
- Ramp Mechanics: Chickens can easily navigate angled Slabs and Stair paths; ensure ramps do not exceed a 45-degree climb.
- Beam Decor: Hang Lanterns using Iron Chains directly under the ceiling roof trusses to highlight the vertical height.
- Sub-Loft Storage: Use the ground area under the loft for tool storage, including Water Cauldrons, Barrels, and Composters.
