8. The Vintage Silo & Circular Grain Coop
Introduction
Built within the circular interior of a classic farm storage silo, this design organizes nesting, feeding, and roosting zones along curved walls around a central structural grain chute.
What This Idea Means
This layout solves the challenge of circular spatial design. It turns round wall geometry into an advantage by wrapping functional farm elements around a dramatic central vertical pillar.
How to Make It
- Construct a circular room with a diameter of 7 to 9 blocks using Mud Bricks, Terracotta, or Granite.
- Build a central structural column in the middle of the room out of Composter blocks, Hay Bales, and Barrels.
- Spiral elevated wooden walkways and perches around the central pillar using Dark Oak Stairs and Slabs.
- Line the outer curved walls with individual nesting cubbies built out of Trapdoors and Chiseled Bookshelves.
- Hang chain lanterns down the central shaft to cast light across all vertical levels of the silo interior.
Tips & Variations
- Composter Integration: Fill Composters to varying levels around the center stack to simulate real stored grain feed.
- Curved Roof Trusses: Converge ceiling beams inward toward the central column to emphasize height and rounded geometry.
- Vertical Movement: Chickens can easily hop up spiraled stair steps wrapping around the center pillar.
